THE TILT TUMBLER

A drinking vessel three inches in diameter composed of wood and glass to provide the user with a unique experience of grip and interaction. This product is desgined for the indoors to provide an elegant touch to any kitchen counter, dining room table, office desk, or cafe with the user in mind. The wooden base has four shallow angled cuts so that the cup can sit on five different faces to mimic the interactions going on at the table. The visual, tactile, and emotional interactions with this vessel lead to the item not only being functional but a piece of art as well, meant to be left out and displayed.

Users and Environment: For the first step being to identify the users and environment, I narrowed my focus to twenty to sixty year old loft, house, cafe, or restaurant owners that like to entertain guests in a rustic but modern setting.

Ideation and Foam Models: These are some of the beginning iterations and models through sketching different geometric bases for the cup that were then modeled by turning foam on the lathe and hollowed out. Practice angled cuts were made to the base to see how the cup could interact with the table. Storyboarding the item in context proved also to be beneficial before moving to the next step of 3D computer and physicals renders.

3D Rendering and Physical Models: 3d models were made using Fusion 360 and are scaled to size. The physical model was turned on the lathe and hollowed out using the lathe and drill press. Angled cuts were then made so that the base is capable of sitting on five different shallow faces. Glass was cut from recycled wine bottles and drinking cups at a 3 inch diameter to fit in a slot groove cut into the wooden base.
